How To Play Tennis, Self-Analysis

Tuesday, March 9, 2010
posted by Rdgventure 11:39 AM

I think that in order to improve your tennis game, you must be able to accept criticism not only from your peers, but from yourself, as well.  Tennis professionals games are analyzed every time they step out on the court.  There are even some tennis players who keep notes while they are playing their match.  During a changeover, they will check their personal notes to see if they are executing their shots in a positive manner.

Recreational tennis players should try to learn how to analyze their tennis game after they play their match.  You will learn how to play tennis more efficiently if you are able to learn from your mistakes.  You should start your mental analysis at least one hour after you play.  Self-analysis should include your outlook before you started playing and consider how that might have affected your play.

You should devise a self-rating system for yourself.  If you are able to analyze your own matches, you will be that much further along to success on how to play tennis.

Practice Really Does Make Perfect

About a year ago, Malcolm Gladwell published a book called “Outliers,” exploring the possible reasons why some artists, inventors, business moguls and athletes succeed so brilliantly compared to others. In a nutshell, he found evidence that practice really does make perfect. The Beatles played for months in small German music halls, honing their skills and building unparalleled chemistry.

The theory can be applied to tennis as well. Although it’s undeniable that some people simply possess more athletic talent than others, hours of practice time can make a huge difference in terms of technique and results. It’s not always possible to track down a hitting partner, which is why serious players devote so much time practicing with a tennis ball machine. It’s possible to mix up the speed, spin and direction of the ball to keep a budding player on his or her toes.

Upgrading to the Open Stance

If you watch tapes of old tennis matches, you’ll probably notice a few drastic differences compared to the modern day. Yes, the fashion trends have changed and racquet technology has improved by leaps and bounds, but look even closer. The fundamental technique behind the forehand groundstroke was completely revolutionized within the last decade.

The old, closed-stance forehand required a right-handed player to keep both feet perpendicular to the baseline when hitting the ball. Today, the open-stance forehand is much more popular among professionals as it allows for more power and quicker recovery time after executing a shot. To hit the open-stance forehand, players must step into the ball with the outside leg, striking early with their tennis racquets. When in doubt, switch on a televised match and do your best to emulate the players’ movements.

No Player Is ‘Too Good’ for Tennis Lessons

Tennis can be enjoyed from a carefree, recreational level, but it’s also a sport that brings out plenty of competitive spirit in players. It can be humbling to take on a player of a vastly superior skill level, but that’s one of the most effective ways to improve. The other way is slightly less embarrassing, but it does require dedication. Tennis instruction is useful for all players – from newbies to touring pros.

Without proper instruction, it’s easy for tennis players to develop bad habits. Whether it’s a question of grip, swing technique or court positioning, expert advice is always a bonus. If you’ve just signed up for tennis lessons, don’t approach them as if you know all there is to know. Humble yourself before the instructor and act as a sponge for the information she has to impart. You’re guaranteed to get more out of the sessions that way.
