On this day in 1993, Arthur Ashe passed away from complications from the Aids virus which he contracted from a faulty blood transfusion.  Arthur Ashe has inspired countless numbers of tennis players of all races and nationalities because of his indomitable spirit.  For tennis players who did not have the pleasure of watching Arthur Ashe play, you may purchase a tennis video,  “Wimbledon 1975 Final: Ashe vs. Connors.”

Product Description

The 1975 Championship reached a spectacular climax to the Gentlemen’s Singles Final between the world’s then number one player, Jimmy Connors and Arthur Ashe.

Connors, a self-taught player from Belleville, Illinois had burst on the tennis scene only a couple of years earlier and was taking the tennis world by storm.  In fact, he had enjoyed the most successful years of tennis that any player had experienced.

During the championships he looked invincible having waltzed through to the Final without losing a single set.

However there was a final twist in store, as Ashe overcame all the odds to beat the younger champion in four thrilling sets to win the most coveted title of all.

Here is a very informative article on how to buy a tennis ball machine.  It was taken from a contributing editor for eHow.

Buying a tennis ball machine is an investment.  Players and coaches find that they can be wonderful tools for drilling, or just for taking some some strokes when there is no one around to hit with them.  Modern technology advances have made these machines more versatile than ever before, and the variables in programming them are virtually endless.  That’s why it’s important to do your research when you decide to buy a tennis ball machine.

Step 1.  Figure out your budget for buying a tennis ball machine.

Step 2.  Visit some the gyms and racket clubs in your area.  Find out what tennis ball machines they use.

Step 3.  Consider the options you want in a tennis ball machine.  A good machine today will have options such as oscillation, backspin, topspin and height settings.  Many are programmable to hit a certain sequence of shots, so you can virtually play a whoe “game” using the machine as a partner.

Step 4.  Talk to people who own tennis ball machine before you buy.  They should be impartial users.

Women’s Tennis Apparel Buying Tips

When buying women’s tennis apparel, you should be choosy when picking out your tennis apparel.  For example, when picking out women’s skirts, you need to rely on comfort.  You need to be able to play without any restrictions in your movement.  Tennis is a lot of fun, but in order to enoy the game, you need to be able to move freely.

According to Sydney Jordan’s Oudoor Sports Gear Site collared shirts is the best way to go when picking out shirts.  I do not disagree with that assumption.  However, I do like to wear a variety of tennis clothing.  It is a matter of personal taste, whatever style of clothing that one should wear as long as it is in good taste and not offensive to anyone.  If you are comfortable with what you are wearing, there should be no problem with the women’s tennis apparel of your choice.

How To Improve Your Tennis Game

This article was taken from a recent article in WikiHow.  I think it is an important article for people who are discouraged about their progress in learning how to play tennis

Practice, although just playing is not enough; you have to play with the right people, play often, and play under the right learning atmosphere.  Just getting together with your regular partner 1-3 times a week is not enough and may even hurt your game; it will definitely stop you from improving.  You will make the same mistakes over and over and the game will continue to be a major challenge.

The bottom line is that in order to improve your tennis game, you have to put the time in by playing as often as you can and by playing as many people as you can.

Tennis Training Drills, Practice Your Footwork

A good tennis training drill should always include footwork. A tennis player who has good footwork will be able to reach and hit a tennis ball with controlled effort. An example of a player who hits the ball with controlled effort is the incomparable, Roger Federer. One of the reasons why Roger Federer is the number one player in the world is his amazing footwork. he may not be as fast as some of his younger contemporaries, but he has great instincts and anticipation.

A good way to get started with a tennis training drill for footwork begins with the warmup drills. you start off by jogging across the court and then a backwards jog in return. The next thing you do is try the backwards skip, this exercise is not only good for your cooridination, but it is easy on the legs.

The sidestep is another great tennis training drill. To do this drill, turn sideways and practice skipping from the right to the left a few steps and then turn around and repeat the steps. The chances of you getting to the tennis ball will increase by learning these basic footwork drills.

The Wison tennis racquets that professional tennis players play with can be purchased by recreational tennis players of all playing levels.  One of the reasons why I enjoy playing tennis is that you can play with the same or similar tennis racquet that the professional tennis players play with.  The Wilson Tennis Racquet is favored by Roger Federer.  The accomplishments of Roger is well known.  This past weekend he won his record setting 16th Grand Slam tournament, when he won the Austrailian Open.

Venus and Serena Williams have also achieved great success with the Wilson Tennis Racquet.  Serena and Venus won the Austrailian Open Doubles tournament and Serena won the Austrailian Open Singles tournament.  When choosing a tennis racquet, you should pick a tennis racquet that fit your style of play.  If you are a beginner tennis player, it is recommended that you learn to hit with control before you hit with power.

If you watch tapes of old tennis matches, you’ll probably notice a few drastic differences compared to the modern day. Yes, the fashion trends have changed and racquet technology has improved by leaps and bounds, but look even closer. The fundamental technique behind the forehand groundstroke was completely revolutionized within the last decade.

The old, closed-stance forehand required a right-handed player to keep both feet perpendicular to the baseline when hitting the ball. Today, the open-stance forehand is much more popular among professionals as it allows for more power and quicker recovery time after executing a shot. To hit the open-stance forehand, players must step into the ball with the outside leg, striking early with their tennis racquets. When in doubt, switch on a televised match and do your best to emulate the players’ movements.
